What is the difference between loci and alleles?

A locus is a position on the chromosome where a gene or trait is located. So, a gene is found at a certain locus. An allele is one form of a gene. If there are multiple alleles, then in any particular organism, one allele or another will be found at that locus. Loci is the plural form of locus.
