Evolution and creationism?

this isn't a question about what happened, but why it is argued about so much. for something that causes so much fighting and arguing and such, it seems pretty stupid. i mean, am i just not getting something here, is there some actual reason why we should care how we got here that i just don't understand, or does this make sense to you? it just doesn't seem like something we will ever be able to agree upon, and there are many more important things we could be focusing on, that would bring us together instead of separating us by beliefs, like curing diseases, and helping poor people, and stopping global warming? or am i just a hippie idealist who doesn't know what i'm talking about?
