What exactly do you think we are to believe about Jesus to be saved?

The Bible says to believe the gospel, that Jesus Christ (which means Messiah/Anointed One) died for our sins and rose from the grave and ascended into heaven. So why do people make such a fuss about whether or not Jesus is God or not? I believe in the Trinity, but it seems like we shouldn't be so quick to judge on someone's salvation based on their belief in the trinity. I can't find any bible verses to support having to believing Jesus is God in order to be saved. Lots of verses to support believing "the gospel" I mentioned above though.
